Summary:
|
Whereas the researchers propose to conduct preliminary research with high school students in Newark, New Jersey. Their first aim is to understand high school students' views and experiences with registering, voting, and civic education and discussion following the April 2025 Newark school board election. By gathering data on students' experiences during this election, the researchers can inform Newark schools, community, and election officials about the implementation of the lower voting age policy. Whereas the researchers would like to recruit all 11th and 12th grade students from one large Newark public high school (ages 16-18) to complete a 15-minute survey that will focus on three topics: (1) demographic background, (2) experiences with the school board election, and (3) civic engagement, knowledge, and interest. Whereas the researchers' second aim is to document students' civic interests, knowledge, and engagement after the election and compare with New Jersey high schools without voting rights. This preliminary comparative analysis will be an important first step toward a more rigorous analysis to document the impacts of lowering the voting age, which will inform academic research on youth development and civic education and other cities that are considering a lower voting age policy. |
