Priority 2.3 2.3 Develop a cognitive-learning approach to pedagogy and instruction that deepens understanding of the science of learning and centralizes knowledge building as core to improving the academic achievement of all students, including English language learners, students with special needs, and struggling learners.

Summary:

Whereas, the Newark Board of Education is committed to the continuing improvement of the educational improvement of the educational program of the district. Whereas, the teachers, department chairs, and central office personnel have authored English Language Arts curriculum guide that provide a year long overview, unit plans and assessments. The following curricular units of study: Kindergarten: The First Three Weeks Kindergarten: Becoming Good Citizens in Kindergarten Grade 1: The First Three Weeks Grade 1: Neighborhoods, Citizenship and Community Grade 2: The First Three Weeks Grade 2: Changes in Community Over Time Grade 3: Forces and Motion : An Integrated ELA and Science Unit Grade 3: The Stories Julian Tells: A Narrative Unit Grade 3: Tall Tales Unit Grade 4: African Indigenous Folklore Unit Grade 4: The Writing Revolution and Indigenous Peoples Unit Grade 4: Greek Mythology Grade 5: The Writing Revolution and Being a Writer Unit Grade 6: The First 10 Days Grade 6: A Little Piece of Ground:A Novel Unit Grade 6: Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief - A Novel Unit Grade 7: 90 Miles to Havana: A Novel Unit Grade 8: The Odyssey: A Graphic Novel Grade 9: Finding Common Ground Grade 9: On the Come Up - A Novel Unit Grade 10: The Bluest Eye - A Novel Unit
