Summary: Whereas, the Newark Board of Education submitted a continuation application to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and has been awarded to continue the Newark Health and Wellness Project; and

Whereas, the Newark Health and Wellness Project seeks to support youth in Newark in the healthiest possible way. There are 2 components to the grant. Under Component 1, NBOE high schools will conduct school-based surveillance of health risk behaviors by administering the Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (YRBS) and School Profiles. The survey will help the City of Newark and the school district identify current health and safety habits so improvements can be made to district policies and procedures. Under Component 2, NBOE will implement effective sexual health education and services to at-risk middle school and high school students; and

Whereas, the Newark Health and Wellness Project seeks to achieve the following goals:
(1) Provide high-quality, developmentally-appropriate sexual health education (SHE) to all middle grade (Grades 6-8) and high school students (grades 9-12) in the district
(2) Increase student access to sexual health services (SHS) by improving the student referral process and promoting services that exist
(3) Promoting safe and secure environments (SSE) in schools by creating Gay Straight Alliances (GSA) at all high schools (Grades 9-12) in the district; and

Whereas, the Newark Board of Education was awarded this five –year grant, the fifth year of the grant is in the amount of $359,000.00 for the period of August 1, 2022 through July 31, 2023.

Recommendation to the Board: Now, Therefore It Be Resolved That, the Newark Board of Education accepts the funds in the amount of $359,000 for the Newark Health and Wellness Project and will adhere to the spending plan and components established in the grant application.
